The meter consists of a 225mm diameter cable drum made from tough plastic, mounted on a lightweight tubular frame. The cable reel contains the audio signal amplifier and battery. An internal adjustable potentiometer gives sensitivity control, enabling the meter to be used in where saline conditions occur.

The tape is flexible white tape incorporating twin steel straining wire conductors, fitted with a 15mm probe. The tape is graduated throughout at 10mm intervals and marked with red and black numerals.
